PLANET – PEOPLE – PROSPERITY
In this blog, different alternative future narratives are presented. The purpose is to wake people up to think about their actions and their effects beyond the next weekend.
For the second year in a row, the world was no longer making progress on the UN SDGs in 2021. The pandemic and other crises have clearly been major setbacks for sustainable development.
The recovery so far has been unequal, and it remains very uncertain. During the pandemic, rich countries managed to support emergency and recovery expenditures through debt, which helped avoid short-term meltdowns, but which are likely to remain visible on balance sheets for future generations to deal with. We are witnessing a much-needed shift towards a new, which will reboot markets around the world in the near years as we transit from the outdated single bottom-line of GDP-growth and profit to the quadruple bottom-line: people, planet, purpose and prosperity.
The future is not something that just happens to us – it’s something we create. (by Gerd Leonhard)
Sustainable is the new profitable. Purpose is the new product.

About author

I’m lucky, I’m Finnish, one of less than six million on earth. Based on several international measurements and rankings, we have a well-functioning society and that’s why we are also among the happiest.
Fortunately, I have been able to take advantage of the opportunities in my home country, Finland, also in continuous study and learning. My working career has been a little different from the norm, so it is better described by ”flow” than ”career”. I myself have summarized it as being a ”humane technocrat”.
I am most proud of the periods when I got to work and be with young people. Those opportunities have come in different circumstances and environments. Volunteering and working in civic organizations has been rewarding. I have worked for a long time in technology companies in different roles, but even then I always put people first.
I’ve always been lively and curious, I’ll always stay on the same path. Now when I have officially retired from everyday working life, my intention is to spend more and more of my time researching and writing about sustainable society – what it is and how to implement it.
